A wet winters night in Sheffield (in autumn)

So last weekend we visited the Sheffield police and fire museum. It was a cold, wet miserable nights and the hourly so journey across was not much fun, especially the fog and motorway 50 zones.

Anyway, the usual rigmarole to start with of getting in, bit of banter and getting settled in before we got started. The curator showed us round the building to give us an idea of where we should go. Then we got going. As usual we split into two groups, we headed off with Pete, who took us round and did a bit of calling out, with not too much success (though I'm sure I saw something on the top floor of the police section). As we weren't having much success we opened a Ouija board (if you've never done one...don't try this at home!)

Our first visitor on the board was a prisoner by the name of Colin purdow as he spelt out, a man who had died in the jail. A rapist who raped 4women before being caught. At this point my brother (as is often the case) started winding him up, Much to the amusement of the group. No other useful information came from Colin so we said goodbye.

We tried the board in another couple of rooms, but had no success at all....not even a twitch on the glass other than that caused by shivering fingers. Time for a quick food and drink break (Pringles, biscuits and mini toblerones)

Back to the hunting, and the next room we visited was in the old fire house. Up here we met up with Michael Davies. He was a 43 year old firefighter who had died in 1913 in a house fire. He was unmarried but had lots of girlfriends, and was in the particular room he was in because it looked out over the red light area so he could look at the girls. We said goodbye to Michael so he could get back to watching the girls.

Another quiet room or two later, we got a visit from a not so nice spirit called Caine Bishop. Not an evil spirit as such, just not a nice bloke. He claimed to have killed 24 people, but the details he kept giving were sketchy at best. He also kept telling various people to go (my brother was winding him up again) and was quite strong with the glass on occasion. Eventually we said goodbye to Caine as he was giving us no other information.

We then went back to the cells. The single cell was occupied by others in the group, so we thought we would try a bit of table tipping in the bigger cell (it had been 2cells originally). This is where's things got interesting. I'm normally a little bit cynical when it comes to table tipping, as it can be quite easy to get it rocking using your fingers, especially when it is uneven. However with the people around it being people I'd trust not to fake it made it much more genuine. We had a small table and almost as soon as we started to all touch it we got the table to start wobbling, we encouraged the spirit to rock hard and it did, almost getting the table to trip over. We tried this a number of times, and after a few more attempts the table went over, almost getting my toes (being a maths geek I could tell when it had tipped far enough to fall so jumped back). This was the first real success at table tipping I'd ever had.

We then went into the single cell, and tried a bit of table tipping in here, not very successfully, just some rocking. We did have another visit from Caine though, who this time was adamant that one of the organisers son's should go, but did not tell us anything useful.

We went back to the table in the other room with a different couple who had not seen the original action and again tried the table tipping. Again we got the table rocking very easily, though this time it seemed very nervous, as soon as others entered the room or there were sounds elsewhere the rocking stopped. After a while though we got more success, and again got the table to fall over.

This was the last activity of the evening as it was now heading towards 3 in the morning, and with an hours drive ahead it was time to be heading home.

Whilst it was a quiet night in many ways, the table tipping made the night worth while. But enough for this entry, I'll be back soon with another write up of another night.

Thanks for reading :-)
